about
Original recording of the lullaby that I wrote i anticipation of the birth of my older brother's first child, performed on multi-tracked electric guitar and a box of matches.
The song would go on to be re-arranged and re-rerecorded for the debut Remember Remember album as "Genie (For Amaya)"
At the time of recording this version, I didn't know my nieces name or even if she was going to be a boy or a girl. One evening, though, in early 2006, my parents and I were reading a book on Chinese Horoscopes and learned that 2006 was the 'The Year Of The Fire Dog' and it blew my mind that my new relative was going to be born into such a year.
I started to think about fire not as a destructive force, but as an unstoppable, elemental vehicle for producing change out of the remains of the past.
A 'Genie' is the practice wherein one holds a lit match to the exposed phosphorous ends of an entire box of matches, causing the entire box to be engulfed in a flash of flame. Kind of like a lo-fi firework. I learned this trick as a youth in the East Dunbartonshire suburbs, although I am unaware if this custom is practised elsewhere or if it bears the same name.
